Episode 14: Lover’s Rock

After my Sambuca performance, people began to crowd around the table to talk to me and tell me how much they enjoyed the song. A few older men came over wanting my autograph. They said I reminded them of a Chaka Khan and Anita Baker so they wanted to wish me well in my singing career. Terry looked on and thanked the people for coming by, even shook hands of my “fans” too. They took pictures of me and Terry. Terry ended up taking pictures of me and the well wishers when they asked. It was the first time something like that had ever happened, but I didn’t mind. It was actually really cool and I had a great time feeling like a little celebrity. Terry was so nice about it too. He didn’t seem to mind at all.

When things cooled down a little, Terry and I got ready to go. He got our waitress and took care of the check.

“You sang that song so good girl. Your voice is just beautiful. We haven’t had any singing in here like that since never,” said the waitress “Can I just get your autograph before you guys leave?”

“Aw, thank you so much and sure here you go,” I said to the waitress as I signed the piece of paper she handed me.

“Thank you young lady. Let me give you a tip because your service was excellent tonight. We appreciate everything,” said Terry.

She looked at Terry with total delight as he handed her a fifty dollar tip. As a matter of fact, she looked like she was about to cry as she said thank you and practically ran to the back of the restaurant disappearing through the doors that led to the kitchen.

“Terry that was sweet of you,” I said.

As we got in the car, Terry just kept smiling at me.

“I knew you could sing Syrah, but I didn’t know you had a voice like that!” he said. “You sound like an angel. You need a manager. I could manage you if you don’t have a manager because Sweetie, you’re definitely gonna need one now.”

“Well, you’re hired. I see you have no problems getting me gigs,” I said.

We both laughed.

“I just can’t believe you had this secret garden inside of you. You’ve really been holding out on me with that voice of yours. You can sing to me all night Babygirl. I loved your performance. Girl, you have stage presence out of this world. You look so comfortable and natural up there, like you’re at home.” he said.

“Yeah but I was shaking in these sandals though,” I said. “I’m glad you liked the performance, even though it wasn’t planned!” I rolled my eyes at Terry.

“I knew that was coming,” said Terry. “But I also knew it would turn out to be a real good thing for you Syrah. See, Baby you just learned to trust me more tonight.”

“Yeah, I must say I do. You had good judgment on that one. I had a lot of fun and I really enjoyed myself. Thank you Terry!” I said as I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek as he drove down the Peachtree Street.

“You did what I needed someone to do to help me do, and that’s push me to not give up, bring out the best in me, and keep me inspired to do what I love, sing,” I said.

We got to a traffic light and Terry looked at me with those big, sexy, brown eyes. I thought I was going to float out of my seat with him looking at me. I felt so light. We didn’t say anything to each other. There was no need because like clockwork, the radio began playing a familiar tune, by Sade, Lover’s Rock. I smiled as Terry sped up and drove towards the highway. There was nothing either of us could say anyway. The lyrics of this song posed as our conversation. This seemed unreal to me, too good to be true. I almost felt like he was too good for me for what he had done, how caring and thoughtful he was that night. No man had ever taken an interest like this in my singing. Terry erased those negative thoughts of uncertainty the moment he reached over, took my hand, and held onto it locking my fingers between his. I sensed security and for the first time in a long time, I trusted. I squeezed his hand a little to say how breathtaking he was and that I was absolutely, positively loving every minute of it. So I took a deep breath then softly sang “Lover’s Rock” as I smiled about the feelings of happiness inside.
